Description
Bile on My Smile is a collection of poems authored by the youngest and most brilliant poet in Kenya. Its motivation seems to largely emanate from the poet’s childhood experiences: meditations, self-hate, self-denial, trauma, frustrations, disappointments, and failed ambitions. Reading through the poems the reader feels like being in a dark room with an invisible body that is experiencing anguish and trauma, haunted by invisible ghosts and spirits.
What Others Say
Bile on My Smile is a brilliant collection. Bravely, Ruth Jepkorir Koech pens poems of love, loss, trauma and overcoming pain. Interspersed in this collection are laments which illuminate her relationships to self and family, but also to nature. Koech is not afraid to look death in the eye, but in the end, chooses life and self-love. An empowering read and a journey of self-discovery, Bile on my Smile is a powerful first book. – Karla Brundage, Editor Black Rootedness: 54 Poets from Africa to America.
